In the Cold of Winter, New Life Begins

Bernadette Rudolph

February 20, 2022

Deep in winter, the natural world prepares for spring.  Trees and bushes rest and make what they need for spring growth.  Seeds decay enough to spark into next summer’s plants.  So gardeners use this time to plan their gardens and start some seeds.

Likewise, the human heart needs fallow seasons to rest and be renewed, to plan for the future and to take the first steps toward growth.  Though all may seem bleak, the winter of the heart can be a time to plan the next phase of a spiritual garden.

This day of reflection will begin with physical gardens.  What is your current garden layout?  Map out a new or updated plan and get feedback from the group.  (Gardeners with any level of experience or any sized garden (even the imaginary kind) are all welcome.)  Next, examine the layout of your current spiritual life and map out areas that need tending, rethinking, renewing, enhancing or celebrating.  (Jesus’ garden imagery will be part of this half of the program.)  Time for reflection, inspiration from Cranaleith’s grounds and sharing ideas with others will be woven throughout.

There will be time to be outside.  If you wish to go out, please dress appropriately for the weather.  We will also do a little planting (indoors), so wear something you don’t mind getting dirty.
