Cranaleith Celebrates 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment

Cranaleith will be holding a series of events and programs in 2020, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment which guaranteed women’s constitutional right to vote.

Tea and Tour: Susan B. Anthony and Catherine McAuley, Voices for Others
Sunday, April 5, 2020, 1-4 p.m.
Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment with a tour of our historic home steeped in the spirit of Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy. Come hear the story of how this Victorian gem was a frequent meeting place for Susan B. Anthony and the suffragettes. Enjoy an elegant tea in recognition of these women and others that played a significant role in the history of Cranaleith.

Gender, Power, and Canonization: The Afterlives of Holy Women in U.S. Catholicism
Sunday, April 26, 1-3 p.m.
A discussion with author Kathleen Sprows Communings, expert in the history of women, Catholicism, sainthood and American religion. She will present on how women’s lack of representation in the Catholic Church shaped the paths to canonization of such people as St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Philippine Duchesne, and St. Katharine Drexel. Cummings is the author of A Saint of Our Own: How the Quest for a Holy Hero Helped Catholics Become American.

Theatrical Performance: Letters to Aunt Hattie
Tuesday, June 16, 2020, 7-9 p.m.
A one-woman play about African-American Philadelphia civil rights activist, Harriet Forten Purvis (Hattie) (1810-1875) and based on correspondence between Harriet and her niece Charlotte Forten Grimke. This dramatic performance explores Harriet’s historic impact as an opponent of slavery and on the Women’s Suffrage Movement alongside Susan B. Anthony and Lucretia Mott.

As the 19th Amendment turns 100, Cranaleith is an ideal place for children to learn about our local connection to Women’s Suffrage.
