Not Our First Rodeo: Stories of Women, Gender-Variant People and God in the Hebrew Scriptures (Session 2)

Bernadette Rudolph

July 15, 2025

In a time when words like women, gender, bias, male dominated, nonbinary and discrimination are being scrubbed from federal websites, fear and anxiety are quick to take root in our hearts.  Where will this lead?  How will we survive?  What will we lose?
A spiritual practice that leads to resilience and creativity while lessening fear and anxiety is to recall the stories of good, faith-filled people who have gone before us.  Every age has its challenges and people survive with God’s help.  The Hebrew Scriptures (a.k.a. the Old Testament) offers us stories of women and gender-variant people whom God guided and loved through difficult times.  Although they were sidelined by their culture, God continued to see them as partners in the covenant and they found a way through their difficulties.
What’s more, certain women and gender-variant people are remembered in the Hebrew Scriptures in spite of all efforts to sideline or erase them.  God provided them with fullness of life.  As in the past, so too God will do today.  Come, find comfort and encouragement!
Bernadette will unpack the historical context of each story and offer reflections on the relationship between the female and gender-variant people and God.  The sessions will also be interactive using prayer, song, poetry, journalling and discussion.
Each session stands independent of the others.  Come for as many as you are able.
