Spring Book Circle: Poverty by America by Matthew Desmond Session Two Online
Margie Winters and Andrea Vettori
May 7, 2025
Sociologist Matthew Desmond’s book, Poverty by America, examines poverty, the factors causing it and offers structural strategies, as well as, suggestions to individual consumers to address it. Desmond argues that government policies have created systems and structures that keep people in poverty. He also suggests that wealthy Americans benefit from some of the policies that hold poverty in place and calls on them to be “poverty abolitionists” who can help shift the scales of justice. Are you up for the challenge?
If Desmond’s premise intrigues you, join us for a book discussion of his work. This will be a 3-session conversation. Each session, we will cover 3 chapters. So, if you can only join us for 1 session, please do!
