Discovering Family Constellations at Cranaleith: Opening the Door to Healing, Freedom, and Connection

Sometimes the struggles we face are part of a larger family story. In both my personal life and my work as a trauma-informed coach, I’ve seen how certain challenges repeat in different forms over time. Rather than isolated incidents, many of our struggles are recurring patterns, such as being misunderstood, feeling powerless, or encountering conflict again and again.

These patterns are often rooted in invisible burdens passed through generations, things like grief, disconnection, trauma. We may not even be consciously aware of their origins.

Family Constellations is a gentle yet profound process that helps bring these hidden dynamics into the light. Unlike traditional talk therapy, it’s an experiential group process where participants “map” family systems using representatives. This allows unconscious patterns to be seen, felt, and shifted.

Grounded in a systemic understanding of families, this work reveals how unresolved trauma can echo through generations, shaping how we relate to ourselves and others. The original traumas may be from war, genocide, slavery, adoption, or other losses. Familial responses to these traumas become metaphorical “languages’ of the family, creating observable behaviors like addiction, abuse, abandonment, or avoidance. Over time, these behaviors often repeat across multiple subsequent generations.

In a Family Constellations (FC) workshop, participants gather in a circle. After an introduction from the facilitator (that’s me), those who wish to explore a personal question are invited to do so. They choose other participants to represent family members, creating a three-dimensional “family tree,” or genogram. As representatives share what they experience, new insights emerge. These insights aren’t just for the person exploring a question, but often for the entire group.

In a previous workshop, one participant who represented someone’s grandmother shared how deeply moved she was by the insight it gave her into her own relationships simply by stepping into that role.

The FC method was pioneered by German psychotherapist Bert Hellinger, drawing from the work of Milton H. Erickson, Virginia Satir, indigenous Zulu wisdom, and others. Today, it’s practiced internationally and used in therapy, coaching, and community settings.

What can Family Constellations help with?

Clients report powerful shifts around:

  • Recurring relationship patterns
  • Family conflict and estrangement
  • Addiction, grief, and trauma
  • Inner blocks around love, belonging, or purpose
  • Feeling stuck despite doing personal growth work

This work offers a deeper understanding of what’s at play beneath the surface. Many participants walk away with new insight, emotional release, and renewed clarity, often unlocking the next step towards meaningful change.

FAQs:

Do I need to bring an issue to work on?

No. You can attend as a representative and still gain profound insight and healing.

Do I need to bring my family?

No. The work is done individually, within a group. Family members don’t need to be present (though they’re welcome if you’d like them to attend).

Can children participate?

Not at this time. This work is best suited for adults.

If you’ve never experienced a Family Constellations workshop, you can expect a supportive, nonjudgmental space; opportunities to participate or simply witness powerful constellations; as well as time for integration and reflection.

I’ve trained for five years under Suzi Tucker, Bert Hellinger’s student and publisher, and am honored to facilitate this work in the spirit of healing, freedom, and connection.

If something in your heart stirred as you read this, I warmly invite you to join an upcoming workshop at Cranaleith. You’re welcome to bring a loved one to share the experience.
