Almost always the creative, dedicated minority has made the world better.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
This exhibit celebrated the artist’s friends and former students in the Black Community. Sr. Helen David visually affirms and supports “Black Lives Matter.” The exhibit depicts the people who have enriched her life at the Southwest Community Enrichment Center in Southwest Philadelphia.
Sr. Helen David described her fourteen years there as a university of life where she experienced great wisdom, generous hospitality, warmth and exceptional talent. She hopes that her paintings reveal the dignity and the beauty she found in the Black Community on 46th Street.
At the opening on Sept. 13, Helen David gave a talk, entitled “The ARTS as a Catalyst for Change/Transformation.” She explained how the art center affected the lives of the people in Southwest Center. She also related how she benefited from the wisdom of the people.
This talk was followed by a hands-on experience for the audience and a demonstration of automatic painting.
