Women of the Gospels

Thursday, July 9, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.  Cost: $25

In contrast to other writings of the first century, the gospels contain a significant number of stories about women.  Jesus affirms and includes women consistently in each of the gospels.  He invites them into discipleship, offers them healing and redemption and relies on them for personal support and evangelization.  They in turn demonstrate a commitment to Jesus despite the risks of social exclusion, arrest and death.  Each week we will look at a different gospel to reflect on its particular stories about women.  Each week will stand independent of the others; attendance at all four sessions is not needed.  Explore Jesus’ revolutionary inclusion of women and what it means that he continues to offer it today.

What does it mean to you to “have it all together”? Who do you think has succeeded? It is easy to argue that the bar for women today is set very high.
The Jesus of John’s gospel offers fullness of life (Jn 10:10). Repeatedly, he describes himself as the formula we’ve all been looking for, but does so through intimate conversations. These include rich interactions with women:
  • His mother at the wedding feast at Cana,
  • The Samaritan woman at the well,
  • The woman caught in adultery,
  • Martha and Mary when their brother Lazarus died and
  • Mary Magdalene on Easter morning.
  • How does Jesus help these women have it all? How might he help you?
Join program director, Bernadette Rudolph, virtually via Zoom to examine and discuss these stories in the gospel of John.
